Summary: Collection consists of official papers of Governor Lindsey. Correspondence, appointments, resignations, proclamations, and executive orders involve various state agencies and institutions. Oaths consist of Lindsey's oath of office. Reports concern the New Mexico Land Office and several New Mexico counties. Special reports and investigations include documentation on labor disputes in the Gallup area, a threatened strike in the Madrid mining district, the influenza outbreak in Rio Arriba County, general health conditions in New Mexico, and various other subjects. Petitions pertain to the price of coal and the construction of the Hondo-Mogollon road in Socorro County. Reports to the governor on World War I include documentation on the war effort and documentation from several administrative agencies of the war effort. Pardons and penal papers contain paroles, requisitions for extraditions, and reprieves from sentences. Some penal papers relate to Villistas involved in the raid on Columbus, New Mexico.

Washington E. Lindsey was born near Armstrong, Ohio in 1862. He moved to Portales, New Mexico around the turn of the century. He served as United States Commissioner, County Clerk of Roosevelt County (1905-1909), Mayor of Portales (1909-1910), Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico (1916), and became Governor of New Mexico on the death of Governor C. de Baca.
